Flints and Stones: Real Life in Prehistory

Welcome to the Stone Ages

Welcome to the world of the late stone age hunter gatherers. This exhibition takes you into the lives of the inhabitants of Britain and north west Europe from the time when ice sheets still covered land and sea, until the time when settled farming peoples were cultivating the land. Against the background of this changing world, people survived by hunting game and gathering food from the plants around them; on the move, following the herds and seeking out the fruits season by season.

I am the Shaman. I lead and protect my people. On my head I wear the antlers of the deer stag to ensure success in the hunt.

Come and join me in my world

How the world has changed

Once there were mountains of ice, but now they are gone from the land.

My people collect food

My people feed on the deer of the forest and the fish of the river.

My people build our homes

Skins of the animals provide shelters for us.

Our life at home

Cleaning the animal skins and fashioning the tools.

Our art and adornment

Deep in the caves our artists paint images of the animals.

Our ceremonies

Burying one of our people.
